Breeding & Racing in Germany

In order to be of assistance to our growing number of readers from abroad, we are with immediate effect publishing in every issue of Turf Times an English page, giving in compact form all the latest racing and breeding news from Germany in English.

When we introduced “The English page” in Turf Times a few years ago, there was no question about the author. Our English readers could not be better informed about what was happening here than by David Conolly-Smith. Born in Nottingham, the Englishman, correspondent for various British and Irish specialist newspapers, German representative of the International Racing Bureau, contact point for all active people from the island, lived in Munich and horse racing was his passion. He passed away on July 9, 2023 at the age of 83. It was his wish that Shannon Patricia Spratter should continue the English-language column in his place. He was friends with her father, the Irish-born trainer John David hillis, wo is working in Munich, and the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Our columnist briefly introduces herself here.

My name is Shannon Patricia Spratter and I was born into racing through my father, former jockey and now trainer, John David Hillis and mother, Jeanette Spratter.

Due to the recommendation of David Conolly-Smith, I have taken over his part with great enthusiasm and now write the English edition about our German racing.

When I'm not in front of the computer writing texts or pursuing my main job, I spend my time at my father's racing stable. My favourite hobby is riding races as an amateur.

The best race run in Germany last week was the Group Three Grosser Preis der Wirtschaft at Dortmund over the unusual distance of 1800 metres (9 furlongs). This is also the first black type event of the season in which 3yo´s can take on their elders. The youngsters of course receive quite a lot of weight from their elders, and horses from the classic generation won four times running from 2004 to 2007, but strangely enough, there has only been one 3yo winner since then. This time eight lined up, including two 3yo´s, two 4yo´s, three 5yo´s and one 6yo. Both of the 3yo´s came into the race in good form – Georgios (Poet´s Voice) had been third in the German 2,000 Guineas, running on well, while Peace Warrior (Speightstown) had been runner-up, beaten a short neck, in a decent race in Saint-Cloud and had previously won very easily from a subsequent winner in Cologne.

In the opinion of this writer, there is no such thing as a “moral winner” in horse racing. The winner is the horse that crosses the line in first place, full stop. Of course there are plenty of unlucky losers, and one was certainly Maljoom (Gleneagles) in Tuesday´ s Group One St. James´s Palace Stakes, one of many highlights at this week´s Royal Ascot meeting. Maljoom was of special interest to German racegoers, as he had previously won the Mehl Mülhens-Rennen (German 2,000 Guineas) in good style. The round track at Ascot frequently causes problems for horses that need to be held up, such as Maljoom, who had come from a long way back when winning at Cologne. But as so often is the case, the field was very closely bunched as they came into the straight with all the jockeys wanting to grab the rail, and Maljoom was clearly one of the chief sufferers in the scrimmaging.

Obviously the two most important races last weekend from the German point of view were the classic trials in Hoppegarten and Cologne, both of which could have a strong bearing on the German Derby and Preis der Diana (Oaks), but first we shall have a look at some successes around the globe for German bloodstock. Yesterday (Wednesday) the Group Three Munster Oaks was run in Cork, and the German-bred Rosscarbery (Sea The Stars) finished strongly to sclore by a neck from the favourite Yaxeni (Maxios). Rosscarbery, now trained by Paddy Twomey, is greatly improved this season. She is 4 from 4 in 2022, after she failed to win in 9 starts for her previous trainer.

We have just had an eventful weekend and this coming weekend promises to be even more eventful. We can now look back on Baden-Baden's Spring Meeting and it must be said that the whole meeting can be regarded as a success. They were lucky with the weather, which except for a brief period of light rain on the Sunday morning, was perfect throughout, an essential ingredient for outdoor events. Crowds were good, some 30,000 over the three days, and the mood very positive. Betting turnover at 1.9 million euros was excellent by German standards – though still peanuts compared to many other racing countries, and well above expectations.

The international nature of thoroughbred racing was very evident last weekend, when many of the top races were won by raiders from another country. In Germany, the  German 2,000 Guineas at Cologne was won in good style by Maktoum-owned Maljoom (Caravaggio), trained in Newmarket by William Haggas and ridden by Irish jockey Steve Donohoe. Local trainer Markus Klug had the favourite here, Gestüt Karlshof´s homebred filly Mylady (The Grey Gatsby), but she ran well below form in eighth place. However there was recompense for Klug later in the afternoon, when Darius Racing´s Ardakan (Reliable Man) outstayed the local favourite Tempesti (Albert Dock) under French jockey Clement Lecoeuvre to win the Italian Derby by a neck.

It has been another good week for the Schlenderhan-bred Adlerflug (In The Wings), but sadly a posthumous one, as the 2007 German Derby winner died suddenly of a heart attack at Easter last year after covering a mare. He was already on the way to becoming a sire of major international importance – he had had the first two in the 2020 German Derby, which had created quite a ripple - and he has since gone on to further glory. The winner of that race, In Swoop, went on to finish runner-up in the Arc, while the Derby second from 2020 Torquator Tasso won that Longchamp race last year, and is likely to make his 2022 debut next week at Baden-Baden. Adlerflug was champion sire in Germany for the past two seasons; this is all the more remarkable as his foreign winnings (e.g. 2.9 million euros for the Arc winner!) do not count in the German statistics.

After several classic trials now run, it appears that trainer Markus Klug holds a similar position in Germany to that held by Aidan O'Brien in Ireland and the U.K. He has won all three major trials which have so far been run and holds an extremely strong hand for the big 3yo races to come. According to bookmaker RaceBets, he has the favourite for next week's German 2,000 Guineas, the filly Mylady (The Grey Gatsby); she was the first filly in half a century to win the Dr. Busch-Memorial at Krefeld, and would be the first filly in half a century to win the Cologne classic.

The season is now getting into top gear, and there were some very interesting races last weekend in Germany. There is no doubt either about who was last weekend´s big winner: Manfred Ostermann, who breeds under the name Gestüt Hof Ittlingen and races under the name Gestüt Ittlingen, won the top four races, all with homebreds. The sequence began with Danelo (Exceed and Excel), an easy winner of a good 1400 metres handicap at Mülheim on Saturday under top weight. Trainer Andreas Wöhler indicated later that handicaps are now out for the 4yo, who was making his seasonal debut, and he will now be racing in black type events. Judging by the way he won here, he looks well up to listed class at least.

The German classics come much later in the year than in the other major European countries. This weekend we have the first two English classics, the 2,000 Guineas on Saturday and the 1,000 on Sunday, both at Newmarket, while the two Italian equivalent races are both run on Sunday at Rome (with German participation). We have the French Guineas races two weeks later at Longchamp and the following weekend the two Irish races at the Curragh, when also the first German classic, the Mehl-Mülhens-Rennen (German 2,000 Guineas) is run at Cologne (May 22nd, the same day as the Italian Derby!). The German 1,000 Guineas will not be run until June 12th, relatively late in the season. In the old days this race used to be run much earlier, before the 2,000 Guineas usually, but this has how been put back for several weeks in line with the German Oaks (Preis der Diana) on August 7th.

We shall ignore the turbulence behind the scenes and concentrate entire on the action on the turf during the long Easter weekend. In all there were six meeetings and it is estimated that some 50,000 racegoers were on the course to enjoy some excellent racing, helped by wonderful late spring weather. The weather has been mainly dry for the past few weeks, ads it hads been over most of Western Europe and the ground was mainly riding fast, which was no doubt the reason for the fact that many of the top races were won by front-runners.

The three main meetings were at Hoppegarten on Sunday, with three listed races, Cologne on Monday with the Group Two Carl Jaspers Preis (previously known as the Gerling-Preis), and also on Monday Hanover, with another listed race. For all three tracks it was the first fixture of 2022.

With the Grand National now behind us, our tip Delta Work (by Network (Monsun)) finished an honourable third of 40 under a huge weight, we can now concentrate on flat racing and this week saw the opening of the top French racecourse Longchamp and also the top British course at Newmarket. Both meetings ended with good results from the point of view of German breeding.

The Grand National was first run in 1839 and was originally called the Grand Liverpool Steeplechase and was run in February. The first winner was appropriately named Lottery and of course the race has been a lottery ever since; a handicap with 40 runners is never going to be easy and luck in running always plays a big role. We have not forgotten the 1967 edition, when a loose horse got stuck on the top of the 23rd fence and brought down, or hampered almost the entire field. The 100-1 outsider Foinavon was clear last at the time, but his jockey was as a result able to pick his way through and he won unchallenged. In theory this, or a similar disaster, could happen again, but we doubt it; the fences are now easier, the huge prize-money (this year half a million GBP to the winner) means that there is a much stronger field with virtually no no-hopers, also all runners must not only have a good rating to get into the field but must also qualify.
