Breeding & Racing in Germany

In order to be of assistance to our growing number of readers from abroad, we are with immediate effect publishing in every issue of Turf Times an English page, giving in compact form all the latest racing and breeding news from Germany in English.

When we introduced “The English page” in Turf Times a few years ago, there was no question about the author. Our English readers could not be better informed about what was happening here than by David Conolly-Smith. Born in Nottingham, the Englishman, correspondent for various British and Irish specialist newspapers, German representative of the International Racing Bureau, contact point for all active people from the island, lived in Munich and horse racing was his passion. He passed away on July 9, 2023 at the age of 83. It was his wish that Shannon Patricia Spratter should continue the English-language column in his place. He was friends with her father, the Irish-born trainer John David hillis, wo is working in Munich, and the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Our columnist briefly introduces herself here.

My name is Shannon Patricia Spratter and I was born into racing through my father, former jockey and now trainer, John David Hillis and mother, Jeanette Spratter.

Due to the recommendation of David Conolly-Smith, I have taken over his part with great enthusiasm and now write the English edition about our German racing.

When I'm not in front of the computer writing texts or pursuing my main job, I spend my time at my father's racing stable. My favourite hobby is riding races as an amateur.

This is the last English page for 2021, so it seems an opportune time to look back at the events of the 2021 season in Germany, the second year of the covid-19 pandemic, which currently remains as potent as ever and shows no sign of abating in the near future. Obviously this was the overriding feature of the year, and its effect on horse racing (and most other sports as well) was extremely negative. There was a period in the summer when things appeared to be getting back to normal, but the “fourth wave” in the autumn soon put an end to optimism. Crowds were limited throughout the year, and clearly this was a major problem for racecourses, whose income from racegoers, betting, catering and other sources suffered heavily.

There was racing at Mülheim last Saturday on very heavy ground and the card included the last valuable (relatively speaking) race of the season, a BBAG sales race for 3yo´s over 2000 metres. There was a big field with 15 runners and, as so often in such races, some quite considerable weight differences, with the three contestants on top weight (which depended on prize-money won) giving away up to 7 kilos. Surprisingly, one of them won, Atze (Amaron), trained in Hoppegarten by Roland Dzubasz, who was always well placed, improved his position on the turn into the straight where he soon led and he kept on well under Sibylle Vogt to score by half a length from American Fly (Maxios), who was in receipt of five kilos, with the filly Miss Marbel (Adlerflug), getting six kilos, 2½ lengths further back in third. The field was well strung out, with the two other top weights well back.

With only a few races to come in 2021, the season´s statistics are already more or less set in stone, and it is clear that Adlerflug (In The Wings) will be champion sire for the second successive year. These statistics refer only to domestic results, and if foreign races were included Adlerflug´s dominant position would be much clearer following the victory of his son Torquator Tasso in Europe´s richest race, the Prix de l´Arc de Triomphe, worth over 2.8 million euros to the winner. That sum is almost four times as much as Adlerflug´s winnings in Germany from 37 races won - in fact it is worth more than the combined winnings of the top six stallions in the German list, a sad reflection on the current poor level of prize-money in Germany.

The only racing last week in Germany was a low level meeting in Munich, but although there were no black type races there were two races for 2yo maidens, which were both won in good style by a horse making all the running and in both cases looking like an interesting prospect for next season.

Last Sunday's Group Three Grosser Preis der Wohnstätte Krefeld – Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen over 1700 metres for 2yo's was the last European group race of the season and also of course the last German juvenile race of importance. Germany has four group races for this age group and the Ratibor-Rennen (as it is usually known) although it comes very late in the season has often enough been won by juveniles that went on to greater success the following season.

Last Sunday´s Allianz- Grosser Preis von Bayern in Munich was the final Group One race of the European season and ended with the expected victory of Kirsten Rausing´s homebred Alpinista (Frankel) who thus completed the same German Group One hat trick as her grandam Albanova in 2004, following the Grosser Preis von Berlin in August and the Preis von Europa in September. The Grosser Preis von Berlin, now back at its historic home in Hoppegarten, was in Albanova´s day run as the Deutschland-Preis in Düsseldorf, while the Munich race, which goes back after several changes in name, to the old Aral-Pokal, was in 2004 run as the Rheinland-Pokal in Cologne, but the character of all three races has remained the same, as well as the distance of 2400 metres.

Last Sunday´s Group Three Silbernes Pferd at Hoppegarten ended with the expected result, indeed one could almost say that it confirmed the reliability of German form this season. The key race for this 3000 metres test was obviously the German St. Leger, run over a furlong shorter at Dortmund six weeks earlier, in which Aff un zo (Kallisto) had won easily enough from Loft (Adlerflug); this time Loft was one kilo better off and plenty of punters expected him to reverse the form, sending him off at 2.7-1, while Aff un Zo started at a generous 3-1. But in the event Aff un Zo won again, even more easily this time, coming with a strong run to lead inside the final furlong and quickly assert, scoring by 2½ lengths, with Loft running another solid race in second after taking the lead early in the straight.

However he had no answer to Aff un Zo´s finishing burst and the latter was very clearly the best horse in the race.

We are at the end of October and nearing the end of the German racing season. Germany has no N.H. season, in fact practically no jumps races at all, and many leading racecourses have already shut up shop for 2021, including Cologne, Düsseldorf and last Sunday Hanover, which signed off for the year with a strong card which included three black type races.

There had been a major racing conference the previous day in Hanover and many of the makers and shakers in the German racing and breeding industries were present, while most of the races were sponsored by breeders and racing organisations. Main event was the Group Three Grosser Preis des Gestüts Auenquelle und Torquator Tasso-Herbst Stuten Preis for fillies and mares over 2200 metres. The owners of the Arc winner have supported several races since their big win and have been very generous to various racecourses.

Last week´s meeting in Baden-Baden, the Sales & Racing Festival, must be regarded as a major success and the new management team, Baden Galopp, who took over in April this year, must be complimented on their excellent start. The two race days went well, helped by really pleasant autumn weather, which of course is not always the case in October (e.g. the Paris Arc meeting a fortnight ago!). But help from above is always necessary for the staging of outdoor events.

Triumph and tragedy are never far apart, in racing as in many other walks of life, and we saw this again at Cologne last Sunday when Sea Bay (New Bay) won the Preis des WInterfavoriten in brilliant style, scoring by nine lengths after taking the lead early in the straight and leaving strong opposition for dead. This was a most impressive performance, the best by a German-trained 2yo for many years and earned him as GAG rating of 96 (=international 112), extremely high for a German juvenile and equaling the highest rating for this age group.
